Many years ago, my uncle was a successful photographer. I have always been fascinated by one of his black and white photographs of old Chelsea, showing a foggy London evening lit only by gas lanterns. I kept the photograph for years and coming across it again recently I was moved to capture the atmospheric image in paint. I chose oils on a stretched canvas using a loose technique with little detail but strong texture. Measuring 16x13x0.75ins/41x33x1cm, it is presented in a simple wooden frame The gallery image has been watermarked in order to protect my copyright
