Turnip in Tall Glass Vase by Jean Simpson

- Description
It was a serious challenge deciding how to make a painting of a single turnip. I thought it was beyond me. However, whilst in France, an idea came in the night. The next day I bought one of the colourful turnips from the market and set up the arrangement on a stone bench in the garden. I was excited by the colour harmony of the turnip against the muted tones of the old stone wall in the sunshine. For two days I was absorbed by the enjoyment and satisfaction of painting what I saw. This is clearly to be seen in the finished work. The edges of the canvas have been painted as this painting is a powerful enough to allow it to be hung unframed.
