Soni Smith

I have lived in Devon for 10 years and graduated in1999 with a BA in Fine Art from the University of Plymouth.

My paintings are usually about the world around us Buildings, their construction, their footprint, their history, their colour and texture, and the people who lived in them fascinate me. Architecture, the signs and symbols, the marks that we see around us are what motivate my painting. The painting 'nice one Norman' was inspired by the work of Norman Foster, his buildings and his colours.

I like to work with a range of materials, sometimes oils, and sometimes a combination of ink, plaster, acrylics, wood, wax, metal, and anything else that appeals to me, using layers of colour to create atmosphere. I have a free intuitive approach to the use of colour and materials, which is very important to me. When painting I work quickly to create a background, to see what will emerge, and then enhance what I see and feel.
